April 18th @ 7pm
While for nearly all of us who have not had their head in the sand or living under a rock, it has been nearly impossible to not have been affected by our stress reaction to the news cycle over the last two plus years, beginning with the presidential election cycle, then COVID, then COVID policy, then conflicting information and guidance about COVID prevention and treatment, then social disparity about all that. That pretty much brings us to the present where now our major concerns may be about world war. Here's your news, now go have a nice day and remember to stay safe!
From an intellectual perspective, we each have our own ideas and beliefs that themselves will promote psychological stress by just being jostled by a distressing news story or discussion. All kind of 'things out there' can trigger a stress response. Psychological stress, if not well managed, creates physiological stress, which is the actual stress our body is responding to. Unmanaged psychological stress also creates EMOTIONAL stress, which may be thought of as our psyche's energetic correlate to our body's physiological stress mechanisms; i.e. they are essentially one and the same. When we experience emotional stress, our body is on its way or already in an unhealthy stress state.
This is not good for our mental, emotional, and physical well being. Our personal sense of 'okay-ness' becomes harder to manage. Our nervous system's automatic regulating functions move from mild stress towards a state of hyper-vigilance where our natural protective fight/flight/freeze reaction is activated even when there is no 'actual' immediate life threatening situation. Therefore, we have the need to become more skilled at our awareness of stress and take seriously doing what we can do to reduce the negative impacts of the stress itself, not what we (or our subconscious) think might be the 'outside' issues causing our stress.
From an Energy Psychology perspective, our innate ability for stress resilience is directly related to how our experience of trauma has conditioned our nervous system. The effects of trauma in our lives gets downplayed in our society in general, as if to say that we can easily let the past go and move on with our life. Stiff upper lip. Get back on the horse. Learn from your mistakes. Accept adversity as a growth opportunity. That's all well and good as ideas for positive psychology. But that's not how our nervous systems work. You cannot intellectually manage stress. You need tools that stimulate the body/mind energetically to affect neurological change.
In this workshop, moderated by Barbara Slaine, Energy Psychology Expert Steve Gottlieb will discuss the methods he uses in his Clinical EFT Coaching practice to help clients establish a healthy balance of mental and emotional well being especially when dealing with stressful life circumstances. Using a trauma informed approach, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Coaching seeks to identify the very specific events, ideas, beliefs, memories, and stories that evoke the emotional energies that still resonate in the moment as reflections of traumatic conditioning. By methodically 'tapping' on specific energy meridian points on the face, body and hands while focusing on the issues of distress, maladaptive nervous system conditioning may be effectively resolved, turning off the fight/flight/freeze state and restoring neurological resilience. Learning to do this for yourself anytime you feel stressed (about anything) will lead to greater capacities for your own inner resources to guide you through stressful times. The basic EFT Tapping process is easy to learn, and Steve will guide the group through an educational tapping experience so you can try this for yourself.
Please note, that because this is an educational event, we will not be bringing up anything specific that relates to anyone's personal traumatic experience. However, because of the potential nature of the this type of workshop to evoke strong emotions in some, all participants must agree to maintain responsibility for their emotionally safety regardless of whatever might come up. The facilitators, are not able to provide treatment in this setting for anyone experiencing significant psychological or emotional distress. Consult a professional mental health practitioner if you have any concerns regarding this or any other serious issue.
